Vote or Die

This dude is so funny right? Lol

I don’t want to say much about the Supreme Court’s decision about the Voting Rights Act, but I want to document my initial thoughts so I can read back over this and laugh about how naïve I was 🙂  The high and mighty court struck down the portion of the Act that requires certain (mostly southern) states to get permission before changing their voting laws. Basically, there were some states and counties back in the day (late 60s, early 70s) that had a particularly hard time with voter discrimination, especially racial discrimination. So, the court said to them, “You need to check with me first before you require any different voting practices because you tend to act a fool.” Now the court is saying, “Maybe these states and counties have changed so we probably need to come up with a new way of determining who has to check with us first, if they even have to check at all.”

I don’t have much of a problem with it. Sorry! But I’m just thinking that they have a point. I mean, the things Alabama did forty years ago certainly aren’t the same things they’re doing now. I’m NOT saying Alabama isn’t still down there acting a fool. I’m only saying the foolishness is different now. It doesn’t hurt to require something different. Now it’s up to Congress to come up with a new standard. Do the states have to check in with the federal government? Which states? How do we determine this? Only time will tell and I’m sure nobody is going to come up with a plan that everyone agrees on very soon, but I am confident that it will happen. You know why? Because I promise you, people will riot in the streets if foolishness is allowed. I’ll lead the way. Where is my machete and my bullhorn? (Street rioting tools. Never know who you’ll need to cut. Vote or die. Literally.)

I'm Mariah. Jesus is my homie. I live in (and was raised in) the south. I am, as often as possible, actively grateful for my family because I understand their life giving power. Really dislike melodramatics. Really love reading and writing so much so that I aspire to be an author. What else?
